morning. i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist brittney shipp. brittany, i was surprised that the snow is hanging around. >> yeah, we saw the lehigh valley. let's take a look outside right now. there's a live look at the pocono mountains. and we're seeing it into parts of allentown, reading, even down into north town. you can see it's a really thin band. if you live specifically in those area, you're probably seeing a few snow flurries. temperatures are below freezing in poconos. and temperatures range between 36 and 39 degrees. cloudy and cold. of course, once those snow flurries stop in the lehigh valley and also into the poconos. i'll let you know what else is in store for the rest of your weekend in my forecast.

but for now, let's check in with jillian. >> good morning. as expected there's not too many drivers on the road. this is a live look at i-95. you can see the roads are quiet and accident-free on the majors. i wanted to get to the mass transit today. i have a lot of different lines. septa operating on a sunday schedule, same thing with new jersey transit. if you're traveling patco, it's a holiday schedule. a specific thanksgiving day schedule. keep that in mind. d.a.r.t. has no bus service for the rest of the day, chris. well, the roads may be fine but the terminals still a mess at some airports. airlines cancelled 700 flights yesterday. most of those in the northeast, including 159 in and out of philadelphia. nbc10's monique braxton joins us live. monique, a lot of tired travelers spent their thanksgiving eve, right?

>> reporter: hey, chris, good morning to you. we've only seen about half a dozen flights cancelled here. most of them go into the northeast. one flight into jfk. when we arrived a half hour ago, we found dozens of people here. everybody we talked to said they had planned to travel this thanksgiving had morning. they were not part of the crowd that spent the night here last night. and let me tell you where they're going. folks said they're going to places like mexico. a couple are going to san diego. another going to san francisco. they say they're going to visit relatives. going to visit friends. most of them have planned their trips as far back as six months because they wanted to be in a warmer climate when we were experiencing some sort of wintry-type weather even though winter has not officially arrived. throughout the morning, we're going to be talking to some folks that are getting out of town for the holiday. i'm looking for that person that's going to texas to the

game. and i haven't found that person yet. so we're going to have some fun here this thanksgiving morning, talking to folks as they escape, get out of dodge, as some people say, where it's much colder here. live for now at the airport, monique braxton, "nbc10 news." >> all right, monique, we know some eagles fans have their bags packed. penndot crews cruised the roads looking for spots that have frozen over. officials tell us chester county required salting even plowing in some spots. much of upper montgomery county saw about two inches of snow. we talked about to driver who didn't clear off his back windshield and paid the price. >> i didn't see him. i didn't see him. i have is a truck and i backed up into him. what are you going to do. >> the snow-covered rear windshield. >> yeah, so, clean it off. it cost me a lot of money. police believe snow caused

this crash on the northeast extension. it traveled a tractor trailer and a car. one person was hurt. some people are taking a train. here's a live look at 30th station. we just checked right now, there are no reports of serious delays on amtrak or as jillian showed us, septa, either. when it comes to thanksgiving tradition, few can top cassius bakery. for years people have showed up to leave the cooking to someone else. have people started lining up, yet? >> reporter: chris, it's funny you say that because we have our first arrival. where did she go? she's sitting down holding her turkey on her lap. that's sarah tray, she pulled up a couple minutes ago, cacia's isn't even open yet. they're going to start their thanksgiving day by baking bread first. then a couple hours later, the

gift guide. we have the black friday deals plus the gift suggestions for the hard-to-buy for people. you know who you are. it's all our website. new from overnight, a home invasion has philadelphia police looking for a group of robbers. it happened around midnight on parker street in ross borough. police tell us four to five men stormed in a house and took $800 in cell phones. and we talked to ever 0s outside nick's roast beef at cottman avenue and houric street, they say shots were fired, no one was hit by the bullets. two people were hurt in the fight with minor injuries. in new castle county. fire officials are looking at this cause of this fire in milltown. it happened around 11:00 last night. no one was hurt.

in the lehigh valley mrs. say a man murdered his stepdaughter who was missing for day. his motive sexual assault. sources say he conacceptfessed shooting her. padgett was last seen leaving work at a day care. her car was found a mile away at dollar general. police have a theory how it got there. >> he committed the crime, drove his car there and then dropped the truck that he drove there early in the morning. >> please have not called the murder premeditated but they did sate motive was sexual assault. one of the womens in baisher shop shooting in reading remains under investigation. police believe the same gunman fired shots into the salon on tuesday night as well. no one was wounded in that

shooting. >> announcer: now your nbc10 "first alert" weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. and take a look at this, people in maine are getting a white thanksgiving. when it's all said and done, a foot of snow could be on the ground in some parts of the state. right now, thousands of people are without power and whiteout conditions. and it made it tough for drivers. slippery conditions caused spinouts on the roads and crews had to deal with the power outages. we also had our share of power outages from snow yesterday in the lehigh valley and the poconos. we're actually seeing a few flurries right now. also slick spots, that's a concern for most of the area especially as we head into the rest of the morning hour. cold temperatures on tap for us for thanksgiving, as we've had into the next couple of days. we are going to warm things back up closer to average. back to the 50s on the seven-day forecast. here's a closer look at the poconos right now.

at this particular camera, you're not seeing any flurries, but philadelphia, 37 degrees. temperatures below freezing for the poconos. 34 degrees. 33 in pottstown. same thing in westchester with that leftover moisture and cold air. 36 degrees in wilmington. we're at 34 in glassboro. mid-30s in atlantic city. temperatures warmer, closer to stone harbor at 39 degrees. as you head through the rest of today, we're going to be below average. the worry-hour temperature change shows we're 13 degrees cooler in philadelphia. 13 degrees cooler in northeast philly. so it's a very cold start to your thanksgiving morning. here's the radar. here's where the light steady snowfall is coming down from the poconos to allentown. more of a mix, i showed you the temperatures though most of those locations are above

freezing. cloudy and cold. temperatures range between 36 and 39 degrees. your seven-day forecast shows the rest of the weekend will stay in the 30s, back to the 40s on saturday. 55 degrees which is closer to our average. >> 11 minutes after 4:00. because of the timing of yesterday's snow some people may have delayed their thanksgiving travel until this morning. let's check in with jillian mele to see if there's anyone on the roads. jillian. >> good morning, chris. the blue route is looking really empty. it's the typical holiday morning at 4:11 on the morning. we're not seeing any delays on the highways. this is great news. we're also not seeing any construction that we're used to seeing at this hour. the blue route is clear. we do have one accident out there right now at west norriton. a call for action, local activists propose a challenge for federal leaders in the wake of the michael brown case. plus, honoring tradition or

hampering business. a local lawmaker's efforts to keep things closed on thanksgiving. but for a second year, that's where shoppers are headed throughout the day. throughout the area, we'll show where you stores are open today and tomorrow. starting with this one, philadelphia premium outlet in limerick, montgomery county opens at 6:00 p.m. and open until 10:00 p.m. tomorrow. and all best buys, open at 5:00 p.m. and stay open until 1x a.m. the stores will close and reopen at 8:00 a.m. and cherry hill mall, exton mall and springfield and plymouth meeting mall all open tonight and will stay open through black friday. let the fun begin.

it's about 4:15 now. look at this, new video shows a rookie police officer shooting a 12-year-old boy in cleveland, ohio, and we have to warn you that some of you may find this difficult to watch. police went to a recreation center after getting a 911 call about a person waving a gun. that person was 12-year-old tamir rice. he did have a weapon but it wasn't real. within seconds police open fire on rice. he later died. the boy's family said if police hadn't acted so quickly, their son would still be arrive. an investigation is under way. ferguson, missouri, it coming off a quiet night after the decision in the michael brown case. cold rain held down a number of protesters. the few demonstrations that did take place were peaceful.

as you know, a grand jury decided not to hold charges against officer darren wilson in the shooting the of the unarmed teen. a statement released in part, the jury' decision continues to perpetuate an atmosphere of an apparent disregard for and attack upon this nation's african-american male population, both unand old. the clergy also said, the shooting has, quote, has escalated to an alarming rate and we strongly condemn these actions." and the philadelphia black clerkcy also called for action. it wants the federal government to speed up its investigation into the possible civil rights violation by ferguson police against michael brown. the clergy also want december 8 to be a citywide day of conversation regarding actions in the african-american community. and they want future action in what they call a national trend of police shooting black men and black on black crime. and a positive note coming

out, a bakery got a lot of help after rioters damaged her business. vandals smashed the windows of her shop and damaged the kitchen equipment. as you see there, more than $200,000 donations have poured in through the go fund me page. deveaux says she's in awe of support. we have new video of a thief that stole a purse. look at this. a woman accidentally left her purse on a table at happy doughnut on november 25th. minutes later, the guy sat down there and grabbed the purse and took off. the purse had had more than $1,000 and her cell phone in it. police are also looking for a burglar that was caught on camera ripping off a business in southeast philadelphia. this is surveillance video from the main stoop grocery store on pasqual avenue.

in the atlantic city casino crisis a move by billionaire carl icahn could keep it afloat. that would help the taj pay its bills through the end of january. icahn holds the mortgage. it was set to close december 12th which would leave 3,000 people out of work at the holidays. the loan has to be approved by a bankrupt judge. and the borgata will under yo a $13 million renovation. that includes improvements to the buffet, the hotel suite. and the borgata will also upgrade changing facilities and restrooms for employees. well, not a lot of people enjoy working on a holiday, but one new jersey lawmaker wants to make it illegal. state senator richard codey is presenting a bill that would keep stores from opening on

thanksgiving day. codey said workers can enjoy holiday with their families without fearing that they'll lose their job. codey said companies should put their needs above customers. happening today, tens of thousands of people will gather for a longtime holiday tradition, the philadelphia thanksgiving day parade. a live look here at the philadelphia museum of arts. this is one of the best places to go watch the parade wrap up. the parade steps off at 20th and jfk at 8:30 this had morning. you can expect the usual floats and appearance by santa claus as he gets ready for his tough work weeks ahead. the parade is in its 95th year and is considered one of the holdest in the country. and another holiday tradition the annual tradition

degrees. our humidity is at 79%. wind speeds out of the west at 9 miles per hour. temperaturewise, 27 degrees. 36 degrees in wilmington. we're at 34 in glassboro. mt. holly at 36 degrees. 39 degrees in stone harbor. this is a colder start to the morning than this time yesterday. temperatures are down 13 degrees in philadelphia. down 11 in wilmington where it's nine degrees colder in the poconos and eight degrees colder in atlantic city. here's that batch of moisture. from the poke knows down into allentown into parts of reading so this is light snowfall in norristown where we see the pinch. that's more of a mix. we don't expect this to last long. it's going to be spotty as we head into the next hour. close to 7:00 a.m., that's when we're still dealing with light snow flurries coming down. mainly confined to the poconos. for the rest of the day and

well, we know this, a lot of people will start their black friday shopping today. philadelphia assistant district attorney wants to make sure people stay safe. they say today is the day for criminals. according to the district attorney, many thieves will choose their victims because they see an opportunity. if you take away that opportunity, chances are you won't be a victim. so here are five ways to keep your hard earned money safe. use pre-paid cards. they usually offer anti-fraud protection. that's the same run should shop with credit cards. when making purchases online, stick to the sites you trust. and be aware of too good to be true deals. change up your passwords as well. and there are places you should not use your debit cards.
